Feature Presentation: Evaluating and Testing Design Strategies with Dynamo

This Presentation will present diverse applications of Dynamo, a visual programming interface for Revit, demonstrating how students and researchers at Stanford are using it in innovative ways in their project work. Examples will include using Dynamo to:
- Generate and analyze alternative site layouts and building massing schemes to test and evaluate the effectiveness of proposed urban planning strategies. This project illustrates a modular approach to building a robust system that allows researchers to easily replace or add new nodes to implement and test richer and more nuanced planning schemes and options.
- Rapidly generate and evaluate parametrically-driven building forms, comparing design alternatives based on many criteria including their solar potential, predicted energy performance, and programmatic as well as economic measures. This project illustrates how Dynamo can automate the evaluation of design strategies using advanced analysis tools and extensions available within Revit.
Glenn Katz is an educator at Stanford University with over 30 years of industry experience exploring the intersection of AEC, education, and design technology. He has developed many courses integrating BIM, building systems, parametric optimization, and sustainable design, and created Autodesk’s BIM Curriculum for AEC. He also publishes extensively through the BIMtopia website and YouTube channel, with over 7000 subscribers and 1.3 million views. He obtained his BS at MIT and MS at Stanford University.
Rommy Joyce recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford. Currently, she is working at Bearington Studios on a variety of projects at different scales of architecture design and supporting the design team to develop design ideas that implement innovative sustainable design practices.
